Self Regulation in the Classroom

Self regulation is a child’s ability to manage emotions, behavior, and impulses in different situations. "It includes calming down, waiting for turns, and expressing needs appropriately (NAEYC, 2023)."

Ways Teachers Can Support Self Regulation

  1. Model emotional expression

Example: “I feel frustrated, so I am taking a slow breath.”

  2. Teach coping strategies

Deep breathing, counting to five, or asking for help.

  3. Use predictable routines

Consistency helps children feel secure and reduces emotional overwhelm.
